1st prize at Royal Easter Show

Mathew Murray stock saddle with matching breastplate and bridle

Local Wagga Wagga saddler and business owner, Mathew Murray, has taken out 1st prize at this year’s Royal Easter Show.

In his first year in the competition, Mathew has won the Australian Stock Saddle section with a saddle that the Australian Design Review describes as having, “perfect top-stitching” in their article about “Australian craftsmanship coming into its own”.  (http://www.australiandesignreview.com/news/41626-sydney-royal-easter-show)

“We’ve always prided ourselves on our workmanship at Riverina Saddlery, wanting to make products that live up to our ideals of comfort, quality and class, but this competition was my chance to see how my saddles measured up to those of others in the business,” said Mathew.

“Looking at the other submissions I was impressed by the standard of craftsmanship that we have here in Australia and was so proud to see the Royal couple admiring the saddle display on their visit to the Show.  It made all the late nights back at the shop after putting my toddler to bed worth it.”

When asked if he’d sell the winning saddle and matching bridle and breastplate that is priced upwards of $8000, Mathew said, “I wouldn’t rule it out but at this stage I think we’ll display it in the shop for a bit.  Entering the competition was a fantastic experience but with a young daughter and another baby on the way, we’ll be too busy growing our family and business to enter the competition again for a couple of years.”
